You work out the design with them first, then they forge it. The gold is Oekogold, recycled from old jewellery rather than newly mined.

Goldsmith master Alexandra Frei and designer Matthias Frei make engagement rings, wedding rings, and signet rings as one-off pieces by hand. They also take in old gold and rework it into something new.

She makes engagement and wedding rings to order, working in fair-trade gold from Peru via Max Havelaar alongside recycled gold and conflict-free diamonds. Her coloured stones come from a family business in Madagascar.

Over a four-hour session you shape the ring by hand with guidance, choosing between 18K yellow, rose, or white gold or platinum, with stones an option. The finished ring is ready about eight weeks later.

Stones run from white diamonds to champagne and pink ones, Paraiba tourmalines, and opals.
