FOPE is a fourth-generation Italian jewellery house from Vicenza, a city with its own long goldsmithing tradition northeast of Verona. The company traces back to 1929, when Umberto Cazzola opened an artisan workshop there. According to FOPE's own history page, his son Odino later turned that workshop into a more mechanised factory and invented an expanding watch strap, and it was the next generation, Umberto and Ines, who created the woven Novecento mesh and patented the Flex'it system the brand is still known for. A fourth generation, under Giulia, took the company further still, including a stock market listing. None of that history happened in Zurich, and FOPE has no shop of its own in Switzerland: its list of dedicated FOPE Boutiques runs from Seoul and Tokyo to Kuala Lumpur, London and Venice, and Switzerland isn't on it.

That doesn't mean the jewellery is hard to see in person before buying. FOPE's own store locator lists 18 stockist addresses across Switzerland, and two of them are in Zurich itself. Bucherer, the multi-brand jeweller at Bahnhofstrasse 50, carries FOPE pieces, and so does Gellner & Friends on Strehlgasse. Further stockists turn up in Basel, Bern, Lucerne, Lausanne, St Gallen and half a dozen smaller towns. None of these shops are FOPE's own staff, and none of them will carry the whole range: what sits in a display case is whatever that particular jeweller chose to buy in. That's the real case for ordering from fope.com directly rather than relying only on a shop visit. The website carries the brand's current collections in full, organised into named lines (Aria, Bubble Rings, EKA, Essentials, Love Nest, Luna, Panorama, Panorama You, Prima, Solo, Souls and Vendome, plus groupings for couples, special occasions and gifts for her, him, mum or dad), rather than one retailer's own slice of it.

Ordering from Vicenza

The English-language version of the site is complete rather than a thin translation bolted onto an Italian original: product pages, sizing guidance, the returns process and customer service are all in English, and German, Italian, Japanese and Korean are also available from the language switcher. Currency works the same way. The checkout runs a plugin that prices Switzerland as its own zone: choose Switzerland from the currency selector and the site displays prices in Swiss francs, kept separate from the eurozone and UK-pound pricing shown for those markets. That's a genuinely useful detail for a Zurich buyer, since it means the business has actually built Switzerland into its pricing logic rather than leaving you to guess at a euro price and a card conversion rate.

Where the site is less forthcoming is the shipping page itself. FOPE states plainly that its "e-commerce is available in Europe and the UK", that shipping is free via DHL or FedEx, and that delivery runs 7 to 20 working days from the date payment is received. An extra business day is added for credit card orders, while a bank transfer order is timed from when the payment clears, usually 3 days. What that page does not do is name Switzerland specifically in that sentence, and nowhere on FOPE's site could I find any mention of Swiss import VAT, customs duty or a carrier handling fee. For a piece of gold jewellery shipped in from an EU country, some combination of those will apply on arrival, so budget for it yourself rather than expecting FOPE to itemise it at checkout.

Returns and after-sales

The return terms are clearer. FOPE's own pages state you may request a return within 14 working days of delivery, citing Italy's consumer code, and separately that you can return jewellery within 14 days more generally. Either way, the item needs to go back in its original packaging with the guarantee certificate, and FOPE says plainly you won't be charged for the return itself: "you will not incur any cost for the refund" and "you don't have to incur any costs for the return of your purchase." Refunds go back to the original payment method unless you ask for something else. Payment on the site is by bank transfer, credit card or PayPal, secured over SSL, and a registered account lets you track an order's status from the account area next to the cart icon.

After-sales cover runs through FOPE's authorised distributor network rather than a shop counter. If the FOPE service centre finds a manufacturing defect within 24 months of purchase, on presentation of a stamped and signed certificate, the jewellery is repaired or replaced free of charge. Damage from an accident, misuse or an unauthorised repair isn't covered, which is standard for a guarantee like this. Since a warranty claim goes through that distributor network rather than a specific shop, it's worth keeping the original certificate and packaging regardless of whether you end up dealing with Bucherer, Gellner & Friends or FOPE by email.

Who it suits

This is a good option for someone who already knows the flexible Flex'it style they want and is comfortable ordering fine jewellery online in English, especially if they would rather browse FOPE's full current range than whatever a local stockist happens to have on hand that week. It also works as a research step before a showroom visit: check sizes, colours and prices in CHF on fope.com, then decide whether to buy there or walk into Bucherer on Bahnhofstrasse to see a piece in person first. It's less suited to someone who wants a fully itemised landed cost before ordering. FOPE is upfront about its return window, its warranty and its free DHL or FedEx shipping, but it leaves the Swiss border cost of importing gold jewellery for the buyer to work out.

Verdict

FOPE is a genuinely old, family-founded goldsmith with a patented technique, a stock market listing, and a return and warranty policy that holds up to scrutiny, all published on a fully English site with Swiss franc pricing built in. It isn't the retailer to pick if avoiding a customs surprise matters more to you than the jewellery itself, and it isn't a Zurich stockist of its own, but two well-known local jewellers already carry the brand if you want to see one in person first.
